"The sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in
its net of wonder forever."—Jacques Cousteau

Sept. 9 - St. Andrews, NB

“The cure for anything is salt water…sweat, tears or the sea.” ―Isak Dinesen

Today we headed south and back to the sea. Everyone we visited with told us we should check out the little town of Saint Andrews. The town is also known as St. Andrews by-the-Sea and is one of the prettiest resort towns in North America. It's one of New Brunswick's premier vacation destinations. The seaside resort town took hold as a retreat for stressed-out urbanites in the late 1880s. With its iconic Algonquin Hotel, colorful main street, slow pace and natural splendors, it serves the same purpose today. The town sits on the southern tip of a peninsula that juts into Passamaquoddy Bay and is across the St. Croix River from the United States.

We enjoyed having lunch overlooking the harbor and then wandering through a few shops, but the town offers lots of other activities like hiking, biking, kayaking, whale-watching tours, swimming at Katy's Cove, tennis and golf. Of course just relaxing and taking in the beautiful views from a place on the water is one of the nicest things to do. It's definitely a place Stan and I would love to come back to.

Of the town's 550 buildings, 280 were erected before 1880, and 14 of those have survived from the 1700s. Some Loyalists even brought their homes with them piece by piece from Castine, Maine, across the bay, when the American Revolution didn't go their way.
Pendlebury Lighthouse was built in 1833 and operated until 1933.
Seaside Beach Resort, our wonderful little inn on the water for the night. We sat by the water before dinner and then again this evening to enjoy the big moon rising and a wonderful sunset.
We had another great meal this evening at the Niger Reef Tea House. A very small place over looking the bay.
I had the evening's special shrimp and scallop pasta and Stan had the salmon...he always has the salmon. We had strawberry rhubarb crumble for dessert.
We enjoyed these views while we sat outside this evening.
Our route today from Fredericton to St. Andrews.
