“To escape and sit quietly on the beach – that’s my idea of paradise.” –Emilia Wickstead
We moved today to Dominical, our second stop along the Pacific coast. It's a beach-front town about 28 miles south of Quepos. The town began as a small fishing village but has grown into a tourist attraction, mostly for surfers. We're actually staying about five miles north of Dominical in a wonderful house that overlooks the ocean...a little out of the way, but very relaxing. The area between Quepos and Dominical is dotted with African oil palm plantations which produce palm oil.
The tiny town of Dominical lacks the commercial feel of most touristy beach towns because there are no big chain resorts or hotels and the roads are unpaved. It's popular with surfers and backpackers and many camp right on the beach. It’s world-renowned for surfing, drawing surf fans from all over the globe because the beaches have large waves year-round. The waves can grow to 10 feet, tall enough to please even hard-core thrill-seekers (no thank you). Although the town is laid back, there are quite a few good restaurants and cute places to shop for Costa Rican made souvenirs.
We plan to spend our time exploring waterfalls, doing a little hiking, maybe going on a rafting trip, relaxing on the beach and enjoying the view from our deck. The first picture is a collage of photos off the VRBO website. The house is even prettier than the website pictures show.
These are my photos...a welcome gift was waiting for us.
