"The sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in
its net of wonder forever."—Jacques Cousteau

Sept. 16-18 Clayton, NY

"No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it's not the same river and he's not the same man." - Heraclitus

We’ve been to Clayton by car three times and by boat several times in 2012 and 2018. We truly love this little town and enjoy just hanging out taking in the beauty. Clayton, NY, was established in 1833. It became a major tourist hub in the late 19th and early 20th centuries with the arrival of the railroad. This led to the development of grand hotels and a steamship line, making it the gateway to the Thousand Islands resort region. Today, Clayton remains a significant cultural and historical center, known for its Antique Boat Museum, the Thousand Islands Museum and its amazing location on the St. Lawrence River. It’s known as the “Gateway to the Thousand Islands” and with its 15 miles of shoreline it’s a major destination for fishing, boating and sightseeing. The Thousand Islands' history spans from Indigenous presence and referred to as the "Garden of the Great Spirit," to European exploration and the fur trade, followed by military conflicts during the War of 1812. It later became a Gilded Age resort for the wealthy in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with the construction of lavish mansions and castles, and is now a popular vacation destination known for its natural beauty and historic sites. The 1000 Islands are one of our favorite boating grounds. It’s unbelievably beautiful with hundreds of spots to anchor. Any visit to the area is fun, but the best way to take in the beauty is to see it by boat.

The 1000 Island Harbor Hotel has always looked wonderful when we've visited in the past. This time we stayed at the hotel and it was beautiful. The view, the room and the grounds were amazing and the weather was perfect for just sitting on their patio and taking in the sights of the river.

Clayton has lots of murals in town depicting their past and present.
Clayton is a charming little town full of little shops and art galleries.
We sat at this restaurant for dinner one night. Our table is in the center of the photo.
We seem to eat at the same restaurant each time we are in town, but we truly like Di Prinzio's Kitchen. The food is good and the view can't be beat.
We shared plates starting with the calamari, then a salad and Tarragon chicken rigatoni.
We really enjoyed the beautiful sunset.
The Antique Boat Museum was hosting the ACBS Annual Meeting & International Boat Show while we were in town. We got to enjoy one of their parades one morning.
We spent our second night in Clayton visiting with boating friends from Ithaca Lorrie and George in their new home.
On our way to Clayton we stopped at one of my favorite places along Lake Ontario. Rudy's had fried clams, a great view and rocks, rocks and more rocks.
My happy place.
