Donny’s Boat Rental & Marina
“The sand may brush off, the salt may wash clean, the tans may fade, but the memories will last forever.”
Today we took the bikes ashore and rode to the north end of the island. We stopped several times to check out the ocean beaches along the way. The water in the Atlantic is even prettier than the Sea of Abaco. The colors are richer and more intense. There's a reef off shore that keeps the waves from being too large and offers some great snorkeling when the wind is less intense...today was a breach combing day. Each beach we went to offered different finds...coral, sponges, sea urchins and even a few sea biscuits.
We spent the most time on the beach in Coco Bay, which is on the Sea of Abaco. It was an amazing spot where we found all kinds of treasures. It’s a great spot to snorkel, but we decided against hauling our gear with us on the bikes. We'll have plenty of opportunities to snorkel when we use the dinghy. Another couple we met on the beach told us they saw a lot of fish and were enjoying the swim until they saw a shark. Maybe I'm glad we didn't go in.
We relaxed and had a picnic lunch in the shade of the trees before heading back on a road that looked like a washed out riverbed. I thought the Abaco Islands were flat...not the case on Green Turtle Cay. They all seemed to go up hill today, especially on these rough little roads. We definitely got a good workout.
We went back into town this afternoon for a few supplies...rum and bread. We've been told that each town in the Abacos has a great bakery. We intend to try all we can find. We've enjoyed our quiet spot in Black Sound but we are moving on tomorrow to No Name Cay. It's only four miles away. We'll be looking for swimming pigs, conchs, beautiful beaches and maybe a little snorkeling.
A look at one of the ocean beaches we went to today
This is actually one of the better roads...I couldn't stop and take a picture on the worse. One of the large pieces of coral I found today...Stan wouldn't haul it home for me!
Coco Bay
A few of our (my) treasures. We found over 20 sea urchins today...I gave two away and I broke a few on the way back to the boat. These are the best ones.
