We woke up in our private little paradise and had breakfast on the flybridge, a short while later we had a shower that rinsed the salt from the boat and brought us a beautiful rainbow. Not a bad way to start the day. Our trip today was relatively short…through the Sea of Abaco to Green Turtle Cay. We found a great little spot to stay; Donny’s Boat Rental & Marina has some wonderful deals. We are on a mooring well protected in Black Sound and his wifi works on the boat…we may have a hard time leaving this spot. We spent the rest of the day exploring New Plymouth and catching up with family and friends on the Internet.

Green Turtle Cay is 3 miles long and 1/2 mile wide. It was named after the abundance of green turtles that inhabited the area. The population of the island is about 450 and its main settlement is New Plymouth, which was founded in the 18th century by English loyalists that left the US after the Revolutionary War. It sits on a spit of land that partially surrounds a shallow harbour. The architecture of the older homes in the village is unique in the Bahamas, with steep-pitched roofs, originating with settlers from New England. The only difference is they are all painted in bright colors. It’s a quaint place where hard-working generations have tried their hand at everything from shipping pineapples and turtles to shark fishing and lobstering. Lobstering remains as a viable enterprise, but most of the residents are involved in tourism and construction.
