Mile Hammock Bay - Anchorage

Another beautiful day on the water. Most of our travels today was through low marshy areas, with little scenery worth taking pictures of, especially since we’ve been through here several other times. We passed quite a few inlets to the Atlantic Ocean, so the water is much prettier in this area of North Carolina. Instead of the brown tea looking water, we have a deep teal. I thought we might see a few dolphins…but I guess they didn’t want to come play with us today.

We anchored in Mile Hammock Bay, which is a small man-made bay that is part of Camp Lejeune. This harbor was built during World War II to give the Marines a place to practice amphibious landings. Camp Lejeune is an active military training base and maneuvers are still conducted in the Bay…luckily it’s been quiet the two times we have been here. We were joined in the anchorage by five sailboats and 4 other motor yachts. We invited Jim and Betsy from Smiles over for dinner and had another fun evening exchanging cruising stories.

We left the dock as the sun was coming up. We wanted to get out of Southport before the winds picked up again.
Homes close to Wrightsville Beach...the tide is out. Notice how high the piers are? (click on the picture to make it play)
