Southport Marina
It was another short day
on the water. The day was beautiful but very windy. Our plan was to stay at one
of the free docks at the restaurants along the water and then make the short
trip over to Bald Head Island tomorrow, but the high winds made it impossible
to get into the small slips the restaurants have. We decided to stay at the
town marina, which was a good choice...they had three guys on the dock to help
us get in. With wind gusts between 25-30 MPH, docking was a real challenge. We
were tied up by 2:00 and we had the rest of the day to relax. The marina is
close to the historic part of town, but we stayed close to the boat. The wind
made it too uncomfortable to do much exploring. We may have to cancel our plans
to visit Bald Head Island...the high winds that are predicted would make it too
hard to get there and too uncomfortable to spend time on the beach. We'll have
to put it on our list of things to do on our way south next fall. Weather plays
the biggest part in boating plans…sometimes it even changes things drastically.
You have to learn to go with the flow when you're cruising.
This part of the ICW, just north of Myrtle Beach is known as the Rock Pile. The ICW is narrow here and lined by rocks.

We stayed at the Southport free dock hard to get off or onboard depending on the tide. I thought the town was one of the prettiest I've seen in a long time.
