June 9 - Newark, NY

Newark Town Dock

"I've come to know that what we want in life is the greatest indication of who we really are." —Richard Paul Evans

We had another short day planned, so we thought we'd wander through Lyons a little more and visit the farmers market. The only problem we encountered...the farmers market doesn't start for another week or so. Too sad, we enjoy farmers markets, but not a surprise since summer really doesn't start around here till the middle of June...or even July.

Three locks and five miles west and we were docked in Newark. Newark, New York was founded in 1819. It was originally called Miller's Basin named after Captain Joseph Miller who was contracted to build one and one fourth miles of the Erie Canal through the forests and wetlands so prevalent in the area. An early settlement in the area began in the 1790s but the survival and development of the present village is directly attributed to the "digging of a ditch". That ditch would become the Erie Canal and if not for the canal, Newark would not exist today.

This is the kind of cruising we really enjoy...a little boating, cute towns to explore, places close by to eat and time to just relax and enjoy the view from our back deck.
While we were out looking for the farmers market we found a few more murals in Lyons
The Pearl as seen from the Geneva St. Bridge
A view of Lyons from the south bank of the Erie Canal
Lock 27 right in Lyons...the locks are beginning to all look alike
Can you see the trail? The old tow paths are now a hiking, jogging, biking trail that follows the Eric Canal.
Lock 28A is one of the largest lifts in the area and it also has a dry dock for working on canal tugs
Lock 28B - we had to wait for another boat locking down, so we pulled over to the side and tied off
Murals on the East Ave. Bridge in Newark
The Pearl on the wall in Newark. Not a lot of boat traffic on the Erie yet. Summer doesn't really get started here for another couple of weeks.
We had lunch in town, wandered through a couple of church festivals and enjoyed our walk through a beautiful old neighborhood. We even walked through a little clock museum...they reminded me of the clocks my parents had.
We fixed dinner on the grill and enjoyed this view while we ate.
