Fillmore Glen State Park

Allan H. Treman State Marine Park

"People grow through experience if they meet life honestly and courageously. This is how character is built." —Eleanor Roosevelt
On our way back from the Lavender Festival on Saturday we stopped by Fillmore Glen State Park. It's an oasis of cool, dense woods crowding into a long, narrow gorge. The hiking trails offer spectacular views, unique geological formations, a botanically rich glen and five more beautiful waterfalls. The park was named for President Millard Fillmore, who was born in a log cabin about five miles from the park.

We hiked the Gorge Trail that crosses a series of eight bridges as it follows Dry Creek up the glen. We felt like we were walking through a rainforest...lush vines and ferns, water seeping from the ground and small waterfalls coming into the creek from the cliffs. It truly was an oasis on a summer day.

The "Cowsheds" is a huge recess in the cliff next to the Lower Falls at the beginning of the glen. It is said that cattle would come up here to escape the summer heat in the days before the this area was a state park
