July 17 - Nantucket, MA

Nantucket Town Moorings

"Once a year, go someplace you’ve never been before." – Dalai Lama

This is the first time in years we’re actually in a new place. We've’ stayed in a few new harbors and anchorages, but Nantucket is a whole new destination. We've been in New England for a week and this morning was our first time to wake up to fog. We waited for the fog to lift some before we headed to the floating water dock. We filled up our water tanks and then head east in Nantucket Sound to Nantucket.

Nantucket sits about 20 miles east of Martha's Vineyard and 30 miles south of Cape Cod. The name comes from an Indian word meaning "faraway land or island". Nantucket was a busy whaling port in the 19th-century, but is now a popular vacation destination with dune-backed beaches. It’s marked by its unpainted cedar-shingled buildings, many surrounded by manicured yards and gardens. The wharves and cobblestoned streets of the Town of Nantucket are lined with restaurants, high-end boutiques and steepled churches.

We spent the afternoon wandering through the wharf area, looking in some of the small shops and admiring the huge yachts at the marina. We also rode our bikes out to the Cisco Brewery. It reminded us a lot of the Jester King Brewery in Austin, but on a considerably smaller scale. It was a fun place to spend a few hours listening to music and sampling their craft beer, but it was very crowded.

By the time we returned to the boat the fog had rolled back in. We'll be eating onboard mostly while we're here since everything on the island is VERY expensive. Tomorrow we’ll explore more of the island.

Going back to the boat about 5:00. It seemed much later.
