May 9 – Portsmouth, VA

High St. Ferry Dock

“I haven’t been everywhere, but it’s on my list” –Susan Sontag

It's only 12 miles from Great Bridge to Norfolk but it can take half a day to navigate. Most of the low bridges have been replaced with taller one, but the railroad bridges seem to always be under construction. One in particular was closed from 9-1 today, so we left Great Bridge with the 11:00 opening. Which gave us plenty of time to stop for diesel at another marina called Top Rack. We filled our fuel tanks and water tanks and got a pump out...we're good for quite a while.

It took us about an hour to take care of our living necessities and we were on our way. We got to the railroad bridge that was holding up traffic just after it opened. What a traffic jam...at least 15 boats waiting to go north and almost as many moving south. It was a slow trip up to Portsmouth, where we found a spot on the wall in the High Street ferry basin. We spent the rest of the afternoon visiting with other boaters on the wall and exploring Portsmouth just a little.

There are a lot of boat yards in the Norfolk area.

The Lightship PORTSMOUTH was built in 1915. She served for 48 years off the coasts of Virginia, Delaware and Massachusetts.

    1. The free dock at the end of High St. has been a great place to waste a few days. Lots to see and a lot of boaters in and out. We're killing time until we go to a Monk Rendevouz on May 17. We'll be around the Chesapeake until sometime in early July.
