Great
Salt Pond Mooring Field
I'm
beginning to think the sun doesn't shine in Rhode Island...we woke up to foggy
cloudy skies again. I unpacked the suitcases and cleaned the cabin while Stan
filled the water tanks and did a few things in the engine room. We stopped at
another marina for diesel and a pump out as we left Warwick. The fog lifted a
little as we were leaving, so we had a chance to see what we missed on our way
in a few weeks ago. We passed eight lighthouses today, but couldn't get pictures
of many of them because of the weather. As we were leaving Narragansett Bay the
sun did come out, but it was still hazy. There wasn't a lot of wind but the
swells were huge, which gave us a pretty rough ride until we were out in the
Atlantic. Boating here is very different than being further south...nothing but
open water.
Our
destination today was Block Island. It’s located in the Atlantic Ocean about 13
miles south of the coast of Rhode Island, 14 miles east of Montauk Point on
Long Island, and is separated from the Rhode Island mainland by Block Island
Sound. The island is a popular summer tourist destination and is known for its
bicycling, hiking, sailing, fishing, and beaches.
We
ran into a little rain just as we were getting to Block Island so we really
couldn't see much as we approached. Since this is such a popular place with
boaters in the summer, all the town moorings were taken. We are rafted with our
friends on Amici for a few days until
a mooring ball is available. It was nice rafting up because it gave us a chance
to visit with them without getting the dinghy down. We're hoping the weather
clears in a few days so we can explore the island a little. Foggy or clear, we're
going clamming tomorrow.
