June 14 - Saugerties, NY

A Perfect Day
Esopus Creek

What a beautiful day, clear blue skies and 80 degrees. We are beginning to get spoiled with the temperature here in the northeast. This was only the second day since leaving Virginia that we've gotten into the low 80s, and we've only used our air conditioner twice. Both times we needed it because the boat had been closed up all day. Mornings are very cool and some nights we have to close the windows because it gets cold. It's wonderful.

We had a short cruising day...only 26 miles. We are rafted with Gallivant in Esopus Creek. It was a great place to enjoy the beautiful day…very peaceful and protected from the wind and wakes from the river. We relaxed on the boats for a few hours and then took the dinghy to town. Saugerties is a quaint town with lots of little shops. Pam and I wandered through quite a few while the guys had a beer at the Dutch Ale House. We all had fun visiting with people in town, it seemed like a very friendly place. We fixed pizza on our grills for dinner and enjoyed our peaceful little anchorage.

Legend tells that once there was a meadow in the middle of the Hudson River, big enough for cows to graze on the green grass. But the river changed, and now the meadow is underwater at any tide. The “Maid of the Meadow,” the Esopus Meadows Lighthouse, was constructed in 1839 for a sum of $6,000 to warn mariners of the submerged mudflat.
