April 4 – New Plymouth, Green Turtle Cay

New Plymouth – Anchorage

“After a visit to the beach, it’s hard to believe that we live in a material world.” —Pam Shaw

The Sea of Abaco is divided into two sections by a large sandbar that runs from Treasure Cay to Whale Cay. It can get very shallow in sections by shifting sands. There are two options for getting between the northern cays and the southern cays. Coming south we went through the Whale Cut and around Whale Cay, which is referred to as The Whale. The other option is to go through the Don't Rock Passage. This passage takes you through the shallow sandbar. It can be done during high tide on boats that draw 4' or less. We left Treasure Cay this morning thinking we'd go around The Whale, but once we were out in the Sea Of Abaco we could see the swells in the Atlantic were pretty large. Since it was close to high tide, which is even higher than normal with the full moon, we decided to give the Don't Rock Passage a try. We had plenty of water and only saw 5' once for just a moment. Most of the way we had 6-7’ or more. This route is much shorter and our trip to No Name Cay was quick and easy.

We anchored off the beach and went ashore to see the pigs. They are known for swimming out to the dinghies to get food, but today someone had already dumped food in their trough so we didn't get to see them in the water. We spent some time exploring the beaches and relaxing in the shade watching the water.

Later in the afternoon we moved to New Plymouth on Green Turtle Cay. We wandered around town a little, had ice cream and bought a few things we needed at the store. Then we went to see our friends on Smiles in Black Sound. We enjoyed happy hour and dinner with Jim and Betsy and then went to a fundraiser in town for dessert.

  2. Ha! That little guy has one too many legs.
We are lounging (anchored) off of Alice Town (Bimini) waiting on a friend to arrive from New Brunswick. The weather is fabulous. Sunny and light east winds. Have been following your progress. I hope Stan's foot is better.
    regards
