Mar. 16 - Great Guana Cay

 Bay - Anchorage

“A long walk on a long beach shortens every kind of sorrow!” ―Mehmet Murat ildan

Treasure Cay was developed into a resort in the late 1950s along a beautiful beach area, which was known as Sand Banks Cay. It formed a perfect crescent that arched southeast from the Abaco mainland on a wide peninsula. The resort has become Abaco’s largest compound of private homes and resort facilities, covering more than 1,500 acres. The marina has 150 slips and can accommodate large yachts and fishing boats and there is a well protected harbor with moorings and plenty of room to anchor…it truly is a picture perfect place.

We spent the morning exploring the peninsula in the dinghy, where we were entertained by at least 20 turtles. Turtles may be slow on land, but they are very quick in the water. It was impossible to get a good picture. We also did a little beachcombing south of Treasure Cay…our collection of sea biscuits, sea urchins, sponges and shells is growing. We may have to start being more particular on what we pick up. After lunch we enjoyed relaxing by the pool again...I think we could get used to this place.

Yesterday when we anchored the harbor was very full…everyone was hiding out from a front that came in last night. Stan really didn’t like where we were and with the east wind returning he thought we might be too close to the channel. We hauled up the anchor about 5:00…thinking we would just move to another place in the harbor, but Stan decided he wanted to move over to Guana Cay. So we had a late evening cruise across the Sea of Abaco and were anchored in time to see a beautiful sunset. Our plan for tomorrow is to go to Hope Town on Elbow Cay to catch up with a few friends before they head back to Florida. We will explore Great Guana Cay later in the month when Stan’s foot is a little better. The nice thing about the Abacos is all the Cays are close together and there are so many places to explore…it doesn’t take long to get to any of them.

The turtles we saw today were just too quick for me to get a good picture of...so this is my artist rendition of a picture a good friend of mine took while snorkeling in the Virgin Islands. Thanks Janice for the picture.

This is a video of the beach on Treasure Cay. Absolutely amazing!
